Hitting the streets this summer is Gina Green’s third and most anticipated album, ‘Tell Um.’ This release is a unique musical offering that ushers in a new wave of melodious influences. Gina’s refreshing sounds emanate soothing spiritual declarations that share the story of Christ.
The soulful songstress has been singing since the young age of three. Her debut album, ‘In His Time,’ was released by Grape Tree Records in 1996 and received countless reviews selling over 10,000 copies world-wide. Gina’s sophomore album, ‘Changes,’ followed in 2003, which also garnered many reviews and solid sales. She has performed with gospel and contemporary artists Tonex, J Moss, The Gospel Gangsters, two-time Dove-Award nominees, Brent Jones and many others.
Gina’s experiences in life have merged to create a spiritual vibe, which is deeply felt on the illuminating album, ‘Tell Um. From its launch, Gina bares her soul, from the first pumped-up, enthusiastic ‘Hiding Place:’ a bouncy number that describes the deep desire to meet God in a hiding place. A rap is introduced towards the end of the track, as Gina affirms the need to run to the Almighty, “…seeking the face of the One who gave [her] life…” This radio-friendly song is eloquent, upbeat and warm.
Taking it down a few notches, the revered, laid-back track, ‘You Are More,’ lifts the name of God, praising Him for being more in life. While Gina croons about God’s blessings on ‘You Are More’, ‘Don’t Let The Devil Lie To You,’ is a slow-moving ballad that speaks of the trials and troubles often experienced in life. The lyrics speak of everyday life and the pressures that arise out of discouragement. Yet, the song encourages people to trust in the Lord with all their heart and ‘Don’t let the Devil lie to you/No, don’t let the Devil lie to you…” Gina’s raspy soprano is breathtaking on this track, as the soothing words exhale contrition from the heart.
The soft background vocals on the mellow, harmonious, ‘Lord I Love You,’ is a melodic testament to the importance of loving the Lord. While Gina testifies of her love to the Lord, she adds an element of stirring worship to the track. This album will not disappoint; the compositions are distinctive, impressive and inspirational, as Gina unveils one sizzling track after another.
Gina unfurls a set of infectious songs such as the bold, ‘I’m Not Ashamed,’ ‘Take Me,’ tune. While ‘Thank You Lord,’ ensures that this project remains on a short list of promising new artists and albums for the year. The soulful artist unleashes her heart and soul on this album with a transparency rarely seen. Growing up, Gina was influenced by her father, who is a pastor. The divine calling on her life to sing sacred songs is evident throughout the project. The haunting track, ‘Testimony,’ explores the discovery of Christ and what new life means since accepting Christ in her heart. ‘Wounded Soldier,’ on the other hand, is an emotional song that speaks of being a soldier in the army of the Lord.
The album is filled with exceptional musical creativity, while packing a powerful message: that of living life as a Christian. Gina reminds us not to forget that divine blessings are immeasurable and rewards are infinite.
