Having served his country in the Air
Force and having served his family
as a brother, father and a friend,
Bryant Suggs has now decided
to serve his Lord in ministry.
Equipped with a tender heart geared
toward spreading the message of the
gospel to one and all, singer /
songwriter Bryant Suggs is an up and
coming artist that demands to be
noticed.
A musician and a true lover of
music, his talent has taken him
around the world and to our doorstep
as BLACKGOSPEL.COM sat with
kind-hearted Bryant Suggs to discuss
his debut release “We Win”
Jennifer Belot: How long have
you been in ministry?
Bryant Suggs: I fell in love
with music when I was nine years
old. My brothers and I sang in a
quartet throughout our childhood and
I learned to play the guitar. I
ended up playing in over twenty-five
bands over the years and toured with
the US Air Force Tops In Blue. I’ve
never had a chance to dedicate
myself to the musical side of
ministry until now.
JB: What would you say is the
overall message of your debut album,
We Win?
BS: I used to have a pastor that
would say something that has stuck
with me all these years; He used to
say, “I read the back of the book,
and we win!”
JB: There seems to be a doo-wop
inspired sound to some of your
songs, would that be an accurate
assumption?
BS: I grew up listening to country
music and sneaked a listen to the
blues whenever my parents weren’t
looking, so yes, it would be fair to
say that a 50s inspired rhythm may
have found its way into my music.
JB: You wrote / co-wrote six of the
nine songs on the album, where do
you get your inspiration?
BS:
There have been times when I was
impressed so strongly in my spirit
that I could not fall asleep and I
have dreamt songs and woke up
prevailed upon to write what I was
inspired in my sleep. I’ve
sometimes been flooded with as many
as two or three songs in one day.
It is definitely a gift from God.
JB: I hear an emphasis in your music
on the second coming of Jesus
Christ, is that a message you’re
trying to convey to the saints?
BS: Most definitely! The messages
that I get I pass them along in my
songs.
JB: Who do you think your style of
musical ministry will most appeal
to?
BS: I would say from experience that
my music would appeal to everyone.
And that is really my aim, to reach
the entire world with the good news
of Jesus Christ.
JB: As I listen to the song “To
China With Love” I am touched by the
paternal deference in your musical
expression, what is your personal
connection to China?
BS: I was stationed in Thailand when
I was in the military but I have no
personal connection to China per
se. I saw a documentary called
China Cry on the struggle of the
Chinese people in worshipping the
God of the universe. It really
touched a chord me heart and I
started writing and I took it over
to a friend of mine and it was like
the angels touched his hands and
conveyed what was on my heart.
JB: Some of your songs are poems on
the human impact of war, which then
begs the question, were you
personally impacted by the wars of
the past decade?
BS: Having spent twenty years in the
military, I’ve had the opportunity,
albeit second-hand to experience
war. During the Vietman War, I was
an aircraft mechanic and I remember
the fires and the bombs and the
wounded and the many other
atrocities of war. Experiences such
as that has inspired songs such as,
“As We Celebrate Desert Storm”
and the reinterpretation of
“50, 000 Names”
JB: Pardon the cliché, but they say
the eyes are the window to the soul,
your eyes speak of such kindness and
such palpable joy, how do retain
such a positive demeanor, especially
with the stresses and complexities
of your current job?
BS: Well my dear, there is joy in
salvation. Since I gave my life to
the Lord, my life story has brought
me through highs and lows, but my
joy comes from the assurance of my
salvation in Jesus Christ.
