“I was attending my first Gospel Music Workshop of America convention in Indianapolis, Indiana I believe in 1994. As a Gospel radio announcer, I made it a point to experience all the showcases hosted by the various record labels. This particular luncheon was being hosted by Gospo Centric Records. The line-up included Betty Griffin Keller, Lawrence Matthews, Kirk Franklin & The Family and the debut performance of Donald Lawrence & The Tri-City Singers.
Who can forget their spectacular African inspired kente cloth choir robes. That would have been enough. But then, the choir began to sing and it was as though a little piece of Heaven descended upon all who were in attendance. The choir’s rich sound and captivating choreography is still itched deep within my mind.
I knew then, before securing their first album – A Songwriter’s Point Of View – they would emerge as one of the most important Gospel choirs to ever sing God’s music. Twelve years later and five albums deep, I still hold the exact same conviction.
